A message from HBA Houston general manager Emily Hobaugh

Dear HBA Houston,

Hope that everyone is off to a great 2018. We are very excited about the upcoming networking social events and impact programs we have in the year to come. I would like to take a moment to recap our Fall 2017 events and thank all of the HBA Houston members and volunteers.

Last August, after the Houston community faced Hurricane Harvey, HBA Houston found ways to give back. HBA Houston’s Jennifer Tomasik and Nancy Chung decided to put together a networking event to give back to our community after witnessing the devastation our community faced from Hurricane Harvey. Members collaborated with the Houston Food Bank, which is the largest volume food bank in the country. We networked while putting together and packaging 810 boxes of food which equated to 21,060 meals for those in need in our community. Jennifer Tomasik, Nancy Chung, Jewel Johnson and Kawanah Polidore had a great time representing the HBA, networking and giving back.

After hearing Dress for Success’s call for help on the local news following Hurricane Harvey, myself and Amy Cormier decided to host a HBA Houston ConnectCafé and Dress for Success donation drive at two locations on Giving Tuesday. The mission of Dress for Success is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. HBA Houston collected over 200 items for the local Houston Dress for Success affiliate. We would like to thank the following HBA Houston members and volunteers for making this event a huge success: Rhonda Ater, Nancy Chung, Lisa Clissold, Amy Cormier, Katie Frasier, Jewel Johnson, Tracy Lilly, Deneen Newman, Deanna Powell, Ashley Scott and Dai Smith.

HBA Houston finished 2017 with an incredible program Focusing on Your Personal Development with Debbie Platts, owner of JWP Coaching. Debbie discussed why a leader's professional development is continuous and their responsibility—not their employer's. Debbie also shared why it's important to incorporate leadership competencies identified as being essential to thrive and grow in the rapidly changing business environment, that might not be included in the competencies of your current company. As with any strategy, the key to achieving success with your development strategy depends on your commitment to implement. This program was perfect timing as we were gearing up for 2018. Thank you Debbie for such an insightful and impactful program.

At our December event, HBA Houston also celebrated our volunteers who earned the 2017 HBA Houston Honored Volunteer award. Thank you once again for the incredible contributions that the following HBA Houston members have made to help make our affiliate a success:

At a glance, 2018 for HBA Houston will include:

  • Increased networking social events – to help you build your networks and establish the mentoring and sponsoring relationships that are so crucial to our success
  • Impactful programs – to help further your advancement and impact in the business of healthcare
  • Volunteer opportunities – HBA Houston is growing rapidly and we could use your help. Many volunteer roles are smaller in scope, thereby taking less time and allowing more people to participate as volunteers and build the skill sets that you may not be able to build through your employer

I am excited for the opportunities ahead and look forward to a wonderful year. HBA Houston is committed to making 2018 an incredible year, and are here to support you in your needs. Our affiliate’s success couldn’t be accomplished without our dedicated volunteers. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the growth and success of the HBA Houston affiliate by donating your time, energy and passion. Please send us an email if you are interested in volunteering or would like to contribute in any way.

We hope to see you at the HBA Houston event Nothing but Networking: International Women's Day on 8 March.

Best,

Emily W. Hobaugh
