Talent, passion and conviction...
Each May, I look forward to our Woman of the Year event— the first of our two flagship events of the year—for a number of reasons. Yes, it’s exciting to see the impact of the HBA reflected in 2,200 healthcare executives filling the largest ballroom in New York City. Yes, it’s wonderful to acknowledge the growing number of Corporate Partners and other companies that support this event through their generous sponsorship, which helps us continue to fuel our pipeline in pursuit of our mission and vision. And yes, it’s wonderful to reconnect with so many women of influence, our previous Women of the Year, past presidents and other HBA leaders.
In addition to these remarkable highlights, I am always moved by the talent, passion and conviction of our honorees who are committed to furthering the HBA’s mission today and fueling our aspirations for the future. This year is no different. Our nearly 100 Rising Stars and Luminaries—many of whom I have had the privilege to meet at some of the HBA’s 400-plus chapter events—are truly blazing a path for the next generation of leaders. Our Honorable Mentor, Pfizer’s Stuart Sowder, who clearly epitomizes what this honor denotes, represents an organization that is comprised of more than 72% women and leads a team that is 60% women. Our STAR, Carol Wells, who is being honored for being an outstanding HBA volunteer, is a role model to not only her Genentech colleagues and the HBA’s San Francisco chapter, but to our industry as a whole. Her generosity of spirit and willingness to give back have had a ripple effect throughout the industry.
Our 2015 WOTY’s story is one of remarkable fortitude, inspiration and celebration. McNeil Consumer Health’s Denice Torres is a tour de force, self-admittedly someone who was born wired for experience, challenges and possibilities; her personal story will resonate with me for years to come.
These are just a few of the extraordinary leaders whose impact moves us every day. And just as their influence will continue to shape who we are—we all have the power to create those defining moments for others. I encourage you to think about the defining moments we share at WOTY and how you can create your own sphere of influence.
